STRIKE RESOLUTION

A Sample Resolution to present to your local school board or government agency:

RESOLUTION NO. ______________

RESOLUTION OF THE ___(Governing Board)________ OF ______(Location)_______ TO SUPPORT STUDENT AND YOUTH CLIMATE STRIKE PROTESTORS DEMANDING URGENT CLIMATE ACTION ON SEPTEMBER 20TH AND TO REFRAIN FROM PENALZING STUDENTS FOR MISSING CLASS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE DEMONSTRATIONS.

WHEREAS, Greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions are dangerously warming the Earth and changing the world as we know it by altering its natural ecosystems, putting our residents at risk to extreme and unpredictable weather conditions; and

WHEREAS, in 2019, the United Nations Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (“IPBES”) found that “climate change is pushing the planet toward the sixth mass species extinction and thus threatening the food security, water supply, and the wellbeing of billions of people. Approximately 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, many within decades”; and

WHEREAS, according to climate scientists, limiting warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, and likely lower, is most likely necessary to avoid irreversible and catastrophic climate change;

WHEREAS, even with global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, the planet is projected to experience a significant rise in sea levels, extraordinary loss of biodiversity, intensified droughts, prodigious floods, devastating wildfires, and other extreme weather events;

WHEREAS, an inadequate response to climate change would dramatically destroy human health and development, land and sea food chain networks, and every ecosystem on our earth; and

WHEREAS, the climate crisis is a severe threat to current and future generations here in Silicon Valley and across the globe; and

WHEREAS, the massive scope and scale of actions necessary to stabilize the climate will require unprecedented levels of public awareness, engagement, and deliberation to develop and implement effective, just, and equitable policies to address the climate crisis; and

WHEREAS, September 20th, 2019 is an international day of action with local youth climate strike contingents across the globe, including here in Silicon Valley, demanding a just transition away from fossil fuel emissions.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the ___(Governing Board)________ of ______(Location)_______ that it hereby supports the Silicon Valley Youth Climate Strike protestors on September 20th, 2019;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the ___(Governing Board)________ will refrain from penalizing students who miss class in order to participate in the September 20th, 2019 demonstrations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ___(Governing Board)________ stands in solidarity with the youth activists in their fight to stop climate change and ecological collapse.
